Thanksgiving is something very few Christians do. The few that bother to do it, do not engage in it all of the time.
‘Whatever happens, always be thankful. This is how God wants you to live in Christ Jesus.” (I Thess. 5: 18 ERV)
Even though they know of the above scripture that says to give thanks in all situation because it is the will of God for them, it still doesn’t make them lift up a voice of praise to the Lord especially when they experience ill-lucks.
You may ask…
“What is there to give thanks about when I had just lost my parents?”
Give me one reason why I should give thanks to God when I just clocked 32 and I’m still in my father’s house with no suitor in view?
What possible reason could you give me why I should thank God when my fiancé just called off our wedding because of some flimsy reasons?
I have failed a class twice in a row now. In fact I have been asked to withdraw from my department as a result. What possible reason can you give me why I should give thanks to God here?
I may not have experienced all of the above scenarios but I sure have failed at something before. At the moment, it is never easy to give thanks. In fact, it won’t even cross your mind to.
I remember when I had to retake an exam in my final year in the University. To think that that was the only departmental resist I wrote. It was never easy. But some months before then, God brought me to studies that taught me not to let circumstances define who I am. For about a month, I kept on studying and meditating on scriptures that reassured me of God’s love irrespective of what situations around me are saying.
So, when our final result was released and my friend called that I had a resit to write, my mind was already prepared for what was coming.
I felt bad of course but not as bad as I would have felt if I never got those reassurance from the Word.
When you face ugly situations in your life, there is one thing I want you to do and that is to do a check and see if you are still in the love of God.
I know that sounds simple but that is all you need to do…
Do a kind of appraisal and see if you’ve fallen short in any way and if you have, make amends where you need to and love the Lord again.
When that is done, there is a promise He has for you as long as you keep loving Him; all things will work together for you!
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Rom 8: 28 (kjv).
What other promise can bring such joy and peace of mind? A misfortune just happens, you can choose to look beyond the misfortune and find a reason to give God thanks.
The reason is because God is inherently good. It’s His nature. The things He does or works through us are good things.
You may not see it appearing as good things while He’s doing them; they don’t most of the times.
But, if only we’ll hold on and hold out, we’ll eventually realize that it’s for our own good.
For now, are you going through any difficult time, ruminate over it and find a reason to give God thanks because He’s got you covered. Yes! Always!
He has the best of your interest at heart.
