Career is a very crucial aspect of one’s life. First, let me show you why it’s important that you get it right in the choice of a career path for yourself.
Follow me through the following questions and respond as sincere as you can…
Do you desire to make an impact in your world?
Do you want your voice to be heard?
Would you want to become a force to reckon with in the field of your endeavour in the future?
If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the above questions, then it’s extremely important that you make the right career choice today in your academic pursuit. That is the only way to guarantee that.
No time is too early to make a choice of a career path. In fact, the earlier this discovery is made, the better.
However, no time is late.
I know this may sound ironical but it is better to make a U-turn the moment you discover that the career path you are headed is not what you are crafted for.
Still, there is a best time. I consider it a great privilege for you to be reading this article now. Some of us didn’t have people pointing us in the right direction and guiding us through the right path career-wise.
The ones that cared to weren’t sincere with us. That was why we heard things like, “You will become a doctor so you won’t have to struggle too much in search of a job” or “I want to be addressed as Mama Lawyer so that nobody will mess with me.”
This brings to mind a story I once heard about a woman that out of her desire to be addressed as Mama Fada forced her son into seminary school without caring to ask what the young man is passionate about.
Gone are the days when we live for our parents, friends, or society. It is about time we lived for ourselves.
To make the right choice of the course of study, first of all, discover all the things you are good at. Make a list of them.
Put in another term, the first step to making a career choice is understanding yourself. Understand who you are, what you do best, what people compliment that you do with so much ease and passion. Discover what you are passionate about. It could be music, acting, teaching, business, catering, writing, etc.
When you’ve done that, the next thing to do is to carefully look for a course that will feed that passion. This is where you may need a special guide. Convince yourself that this is what you want to do for the rest of your life, then seek proper guidance on the course of study that will allow you express that passion and (allow me to use the term) gift.
When you study what you are passionate about, work becomes fun for you in the future. You won’t have to join the league of TGIF (Thank God it’s Friday). That’s on a lighter note though.
You don’t have any business consulting your friend before you make a choice of which course to study, especially with regard to asking her to tell you what she wants to study so it can influence your own choice.
What you need to do is to listen and look within. Pay attention to the voice of passion that calls you to a particular field of study.
If it means having to leave a Science class for an Art one, please go ahead. It’s one bold step you’ll be glad you took in years to come. All you may need to do is to explain to your parents why you want the change. I believe they have your best interest at heart and so will support you to follow your passion.
I can say you are even lucky because some persons discover theirs in their first or second year at the University while some others discovered theirs after their first degree.
What happens when you allow someone else to make a career choice for you is that, because it is not something you are passionate about, you will not commit yourself mentally to do well there. There is nothing as frustrating as being in a course you have zero passion for.
To save the years that would probably be lost while you’re trying to accept your course, allow passion to guide your decision.
In summary, discover what you are passionate about and pursue it in the University. That is the sure way to excellence if you have God on your side. Grace!
